Eco-Smart Building Expo
The Eco-Smart Building Expo in Gunnedah on May 15th & 16th was a resounding success!
The Expo was attended by over 700 people with feedback revealing that there has already been an uptake in more environmentally sustainable practices in the Gunnedah community and surrounds.
A Solar Survey distributed at the expo has indicated that many people in Gunnedah support a community-wide solar project and this concept is currently being explored. The idea being considered is to create a Namoi version of the New England Farming the Sun initiative which has made solar power and hot water systems 20-50% more affordable, directly generated 230+ new solar systems and solar farms in 18 months, strengthened 'green collar' jobs, business and training throughout the region and built new community partnerships.
Attendees at the Expo were given the opportunity to meet local suppliers of sustainable products including PV Solar Panels, Solar hot water systems, skylights, solar-powered toys, water tanks, vegetable seedlings and more. The crowd were entertained by the local Pipe Band and a delicious BBQ was supplied by local Gunnible Landcare and Gunnedah Urban Landcare Groups.
The evening function with sustainability expert, Michael Mobbs was a highly successful addition to the Expo weekend. Michael's presentation raised some important issues including the colour of roads and roadside vegetation and the importance of these in contributing to the urban temperature. There is potential for these issues to be addressed by the community with environmental, economic and social benefits. Michael has also promised to stay in contact with the Gunnedah Community and act as a sustainability mentor.
A big thank you to all of the volunteers who assisted over the weekend. A special mention to the house-owners who opened their homes to the public at the Expo- both you and your sustainable homes were an inspiration.
